Rekindle the Spirit of Christmas

Christmas is a festival of joy, hope, love, sharing and giving. Is the spirit of Christmas waning over the years? The increasing consumerism has surely taken some thing off from the essence of Christmas. Earlier, Christmas was being awaited for the arrival of Christ. Now a days it seems that people wait for Christmas more because of extended holidays. Some people dread Christmas because of the gifts they have to send. Why are such changes occurring in a festival that celebrates the coming of Christ? What can we do to rekindle the spirit of Christmas?

As children the Decorating of the Christmas tree was great fun. That was because our parents were participating in that. Also because not many things were readily available, so lot many things were made at home. Now you get decorated trees from China. One brings a tree and installs it at home. The fun and involvement is lost. Everything needs to be done fast. The mothers also have no time for such things and the children therefore have no spirit of decoration of the tree.


Christmas is a time of Giving and sharing. It used to matter little whether you were rich or poor. Christmas time was for remembering the lord and giving. Sharing other's pains and helping others was the spirit. Now days, it is more of partying. During Christmas Attending the mass is the only formality many people observe. The essence is missing. How many of us think of Christmas as the best time of the year? For many of us it is just another festival and another days of holidays. We need to rekindle the spirit of Christmas with carol singing, meeting friends and family, gifting them whatever we can and celebrate the coming of Jesus in the right spirit of forgiving and living by the true religion.
